Master Deductions & Operating Radius
Load chart questions are about 27% of the NCCCO Core exam and 35% of each specialty exam, and are responsible for over 60% of test failures! Practice calculating gross vs net capacity with our interactive calculator below.
Interactive Load Chart & Deduction Calculator
Simulate real CCO & OECP load chart questions. Practice applying hook block, rigging, and stowed attachment deductions.
1. Crane Setup & Radius
Measured center of rotation to vertical load line.
2. Deductions & Payload (lbs)
3. Exam Capacity Output
Gross Chart Capacity (40 ft radius):39,500 lbs
Total Deductions:-2,400 lbs
Maximum Net Payload Capacity:37,100 lbs
Total Gross Load (Payload + Deductions):30,400 lbs
SAFE LIFT APPROVED77% Rated
Net load (28,000 lbs) is within safe net capacity (37,100 lbs).
Union Operator's Exam Load Chart Cheat Sheet:
- Always deduct rigging & hardware: Slings, shackles, spreader beams, and hook blocks count against chart capacity.
- Interpolation rule: If operating radius falls between chart increments (e.g. 42 ft when chart lists 40 ft & 45 ft), ALWAYS use the capacity listed for the next LONGER radius (45 ft).
- Bold line on chart: Values above the bold line are structural stability limits; values below are tipping stability limits.
- Stowed extensions: A stowed jib creates a constant structural weight deduction regardless of whether it is used.
The Union Operator 5-Step Load Chart Method
STEP 01
Identify Configuration
Verify boom length, jib length, outrigger position, and counterweight configuration.
STEP 02
Find Operating Radius
Measure from center of rotation to vertical load line. If between values, round UP to next radius.
STEP 03
Read Gross Capacity
Cross-reference boom length and radius on the chart to obtain Gross Rated Capacity.
STEP 04
Sum All Deductions
Add hook block, headache ball, slings/rigging, stowed jib, and wire rope weight deductions.
STEP 05
Calculate Net Capacity
Net Capacity = Gross Capacity minus Deductions. Ensure Payload does not exceed Net Capacity!
