NCCCO & OECP Exam Cheat Sheet (2026 Edition)
The essential one-page review sheet of formulas, OSHA clearance tables, hand signals, and load chart deduction rules every crane operator must know.
1. OSHA Power Line Minimum Clearance (1926.1408)
| Voltage Range | Min. Clearance Distance |
|---|---|
| Up to 50 kV | 10 Feet |
| Over 50 kV to 200 kV | 15 Feet |
| Over 200 kV to 350 kV | 20 Feet |
| Over 350 kV to 500 kV | 25 Feet |
| Over 500 kV to 750 kV | 35 Feet |
| Over 750 kV to 1,000 kV | 45 Feet |
| Over 1,000 kV | Set by utility / RPE |
Source: OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1408 Table A. If the voltage is not known, use the 20 ft minimum clearance option and presume the line is energized.
2. Load Chart Deduction Formula
Net Capacity = Gross Rated Capacity − Total Deductions
Always Deduct:
- Main Hook Block weight (stamped on block)
- Overhaul Ball / Headache Ball weight
- Rigging gear (slings, shackles, spreader bars)
- Effective weight of stored/erected jib or extension
- Wire rope suspended below boom tip
3. High-Frequency Exam Definitions
Operating Radius: Horizontal distance from center of rotation to vertical hoist line center.
Tipping Capacity Limit: Mobile crane ratings are limited to 75% of tipping load for crawler cranes and cranes on tires, and 85% for cranes on outriggers.
Anti-Two-Block (ATB): Safety device preventing hook block from contacting boom tip sheaves.
4. Union Operator Test-Taking Secrets
- 75-Second Rule: Don't get stuck on one deduction problem. Skip and return.
- Round UP on Radius: If operating radius falls between 42 ft and 45 ft, always use the 45 ft capacity rating!
- Read Footnotes First: Load chart asterisk notes indicate special boom extension reductions.
